The first of my new daylilies have arrived. I ordered 2 cultivars from Floyd Cove Nursery and received 5 cultivars. They included a 2017 introduction, 'Diamond Shores.' I had considered ordering 'DS' for its 2x 'Tetra. Rose F. Kennedy' heritage. The other 2 gift plants were 'Dueling Colors' and 'Outstanding Smile.' 'Master and Bold Ruler' and 'Edge of Adventure.' The 3 bonuses. *DIAMOND SHORES (Pierce G.) 2172-C (Cutting Loose x Tetra Rose F. Kennedy) x Tetra Rose F. Kennedy) TET, SEV, EMre, 36” high, 6.25” flower, 5 way branching, 35-40 buds, Extra Pod Fertile pictured below. *OUTSTANDING SMILE (Pierce G.) 3276-B (Midnight at Tiffany’s x (Roseate Stained Glass x Tet Colorful Etchings)) - EV, EM 40” tall, 6” flower, 5 way branching, 30 buds Multi Rebloom Applique. Pictured below *DUELING COLORS (Pierce G.) 2154-H (Born To Be Wild x Tetra Waxen Splendor) - EV, EM 42” tall, 6.5” flower, 5 way branching, 35-40 buds Multi Rebloom Strong Gold Edge Easily Pod Fertile. Pictured below All clones were drenched in a solution of CEASE, Bacillus subtilis for rust prevention.. The label recommendation is 1-2 oz per gallon of water. I put 8 oz in 5 gallons of water and poured it into a barrow. The clones were turned on 5 minute intervals for 20 minutes. The solution was used for watering after potting. I did not trim the roots, I left them intact for anchoring the plants in the pot. Many years ago Anna Rosa Glidden taught me to plant daylilies the "Cowboy Way." I fill the pot about half way with soil mix. Digging down on two sides I create trenches for the roots and a "saddle" or ridge for the crown to sit upon. The Cowboy. The cowboy in the saddle. I then add enough soil to adequately cover the roots and not cover the crown I always leave enough room in the pot above the soil line for adding water. After watering in I check for exposed roots and add soil as needed. These plants spent three days or more in a box. I did not put them into full sun. I have lined them out in the shade of the eaves where they will get 2 hours of morning sun followed by filtered light. I will not water again for a week.
Large Flowered Tetraploid Daylilies I have acquired 3 large flowering tets from 3 breeders in Florida that have continued the work of the leading hybridizes of the lady 2 decades. These lines originate with the work of Ida and Bill Munson, Morse, Kennibrew, and Peat who set the standard of tetraploid breeding that moved tets onto the cutting edge. Greg Goff has continued the legacy established by the Peat-Petit lines. Guy Pierce has taken up the hybridizing genius of Patrick Stamile. Pete Harry has continued to introduce extraordinarily distinctive tets from the lines of Frank Smith. It stands to reason that such benchmark introductions as 'Ida's Magic' and 'Admiral's Braid' would figure heavily in the foundation of each of these tet lines. A few tetra conversions also figure heavily in the lines that I have chosen to merge. Among them, 'Tetra Rose F. Kennedy', 'Tetra Siloam Pauline Henry', 'Tetra Connie Burton' and 'Tetra Barbara Michell.' The most commonly used tetra conversion used in establishing these lines was 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby' which occurs more than a dozen times in the combined pedigrees. My tetraploid breeding lines will include the following categories, 1. Large/Massive Flowers, 2. Patterned Flowers (3 separate lines), and 3. Large Blue Flowers, 4. Tall Pink Flowers. My Goals and Objectives will include but not be limited to: disease resistance, rapid multiplication, balanced foliage to scape ratio, high bud count and good placement, full fertility, is radial scape branching, extended bloom season, clear colors with intense saturation, and wide overlapping petals with blunt sepals. My intent is to only register daylilies of distinction that advance the qualities and beauty that makes growing them worthwhile. To this end I have decided to purchase a total of 10 modern cultivars as Foundation Stock. I have invested in cultivars that I believe will provide the best genetic material for the greatest potential of success. I have thoroughly researched each cultivar's pedigree and compiled an archival photo library. *A Note About Registered Daylily Cultivar's The first name listed after the Registered Name is the Pod Parent followed by the cross (x) of the Pollen Parent. When compiling the ancestry.com app family trees for these cultivars I have listed the Pod Parent first when reading left to right which puts the Pod Parent in the position of "father" to the cultivar. I ask that this be accepted as Pod Parent First and not an indication of implied gender. *A note about the photos used in this body of work. I have utilized photos from the sites from which I made my acquisitions or from the AHS Daylily Registration Database at daylilies.org. LARGE/MASSIVE FLOWER FOUNDATION STOCK Pictured below: 'MASTER & BOLD RULER '(Pierce G.) 4406-H ((Midnight Castle x Buffalo Thunder) x Max Factor) TET, EV, EMRE, 40” high, 9 1/2” - 11 ¾” When extended. 5 way branching, 40 Buds. HUGE Zones 4-9 Hardy Pictured below: 'Verge of Glory' Petit-Goff 2017 (Razzle Dazzle Them x Sense Of Self) x (Lady Alvatine x Tudor Triumphant) Sev. 8-9" fl. 38" 1+Y sc. E to M, 22 buds. Fertile both ways, cold hardy and good rust tolerance. Pictured below: 'Kiss Me Big' Harry P. 2017 17-15 TET (Blindingly Beautiful X Ginormous) 8.75”, EM, RE, SEV, 30” Scape, 4 Way Branching, 25 Buds. Pictured below: 'Diamond Shores' PATTERNED or BANDED FLOWER FOUNDATION STOCK These cultivars were selected for eyezones and edges of banded colors. I have not included broken eye patterns which are more typically labeled "Patterned". My use of the term patterned pertains to shape, context, contrast and width of eyezones and complimentary edges. Pictured below: 'EDGE OF ADVENTURE' (Pierce G.) 2150-D (Born to Be Wild x (Jailhouse Rock x Rollercoaster Rush)) TET, SEV, EMre, 40” high, 5.75” flower, 7 way branching, 50-60 buds. EXT, Extra Pod Fertile, Rich Color. Pictured below: 'Cabo San Lucas' Petit 2013 *EDGE OF ADVENTURE (Pierce G.) 2150-D (Born to Be Wild x (Jailhouse Rock x Rollercoaster Rush)) TET, SEV, EMre, 40” high, 5.75” flower, 7 way branching, 50-60 buds. EXT, Extra Pod Fertile, Rich Color. After discovering "The Lily Auction" online I purchased 'Kiss of Paradise' Pierce 2013, pictured below. For crossing to 'Kiss Of Paradise' I have acquired 'Pansy Face Charmer' Maryott 2017. I will also work with Appliqué patterns. For this line I have chosen 'Jim Reilly Memorial' Reilly 2014 and 'Looney Tunes' Maryott 2017 for there inclusion of the pattern not the sepals. 'Jim Reilly Memorial' pictured below. 'Looney Tunes' pictured below. 'Outstanding Smile' Pierce G 2016 is pictured below. Picture below: 'Eighth Wonder' Petit-Goff 2016 (Cobalt Rings x Blue Riviera) x (Limitless Wonder x Mysterious Zodiac) Sev. 6-7" fl. 26" 2+Y sc. M, 26 buds. Fertile both ways, cold hardy and excellent rust tolerance. Violet-Blue Daylily Breeding'Lavender Blue Baby' Carpenter J above and 'Dancing On Water' Gossard 2017 pictured below. BLUE FLOWERED DAYLILIES. Why not? It's what everyone's excited about! Jack Carpenter's charming little diploid, 'Lavender Blue Baby' bloomed in his Lily Farm field in 1995. To those of us that witnessed it that summer it was all we could talk about. After registration it became the most sought after addition to every serious hybridizer's program. It wasn't long before it was converted to tetraploid by the use of colchicine. Tetra Lavender Blue Baby contributed to many daylily breeding programs such as unique eyezones of intense colors and patterns. Geneticist tell us that the daylily genus lacks the required sequences for either pure white or true blue daylilies. Tetra Lavender Blue Baby provided a breakthrough in colors never before seen but not true blue to date. The pursuit of a blue flowered daylily remains an elusive dream. I will explore three potential theories on creating blue flowers in daylilies, 1. The all but impossible chance of a genetic mutation to occur in my seedlings. 2. To develop a self or edged flower that is closer to blue than it is to lavender, violet, silver or gray. 3. To create a flower with a bluish eyezone and edge that obliterates the petal base color. This is the most common theory pursued by hybridizers. One of my favorite lecturers on Garden Design was Dr. Darrel Apps who is also a daylily hybridizer. Dr. Apps encouraged his students to "drink upstream from the herd." This implies that the "stream" is less polluted where too many hands have not muddied the water. The challenge then is to explore alternate possibilities in pursuit of producing a blue flowered daylily. This has lead me to consider blue in other hues. I have included some purple and even maroon cultivars in one branch of this pursuit in order to "stir the pot" of genes that I'm working with. My interest in blue daylilies began in 2009 when Ted Petit introduced 'Blue Eden'. The color presentation of this flower is very pleasing to the eye and hints at blue. Like many "blue" daylilies the base color is pink with a lavender overlay which adds depth. The eyezone has very little gray sheen as is common in the many generations descended from 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby.' The eyezone and the matching border are complimented with violet bands. The petals are heavily fringed in butter yellow and the sepals are very lightly fringed. I would like to move line away from the yellow borders but hope to maintain an interesting edge. For this I have included Frank Smith's 'Indigo Edge'. In my choice of Foundation Stock. 'Eighth Wonder' Petit-Goff 2016 (Cobalt Rings x Blue Riviera) x (Limitless Wonder x Mysterious Zodiac) Sev. 6-7" fl. 26" 2+Y sc. M, 26 buds. Fertile both ways, cold hardy and excellent rust tolerance. Pictured above. 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby' occurs eight times in the pedigree and 'Blue Eden' occurs five times. 'Eighth Wonder' will be a cornerstone in my blue breeding program. Pictured below: 'Lavender Blue Baby' Carpenter J 1996 Diploid. scape height 28 in, (71 cm) bloom size 5.5 in, (14 cm) bloom season Early-Midseason, Rebloom ploidy Diploid foliage type Dormant fragrance Fragrant bloom habit Diurnal seedling # JC-93-BES Color: lavender blue with lavender blue eyezone and green throat Picture below: 'Blue Eden' Petit 2009 Tetraploid. 27 in, (69 cm) bloom size 6.5 in, (17 cm) bloom season Midseason, Rebloom ploidy Tetraploid foliage type Semi-Evergreen fragrance Fragrant bloom habit Diurnal bud count 25 branches 4 seedling # W-09-1 Color: lavender with blue violet eye and double violet gold edge Parentage: (Mrs John Cooper × (Bridey Greeson × Sailing at Dawn)) 'Pictured below: 'Indigo Edge' Smith FR 2012 Tet (Kiss my Grits X Crazy Ivan) X (Happy Happy X Singing with Angels) 6 ¼ EM, RE, SEV, 27” Scape, 5 ways branching 26 buds. 'Indigo Edge' has 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby' twice in its pedigree. Another of Jack Carpenter's diploid introductions was converted to tet and occurs twice in the pedigree. That flower is 'Tetra Red Eyed Dynamite' 'Sunday Sandals' Grace-Smith 2003 also occurs twice. This may be the source of the distinctive edge on 'Indigo Edge.' Pictured below: 'Sunday Sandals' Grace-Smith 2003 scape height 22 in, (56 cm) bloom size 4 in, (10 cm) bloom season Midseason, Rebloom ploidy Tetraploid foliage type Semi-Evergreen bloom habit Diurnal bud count 26 branches 5 seedling # 55599 Color: ivory with violet eye and edge above green throat Parentage: (sdlg × unknown) Pictured below: 'Karma Queen' Harry P 2017 17-25 TET (Tavares Special Effects X Blue Reality) 7.5”, EM, RE, SEV, 34” Scape, 4 Way Branching, 30 Buds. I've chosen 'Karma Queen' for this program for both its similarity to 'Eighth Wonder' and its genetic background. While it too is a progeny of 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby', its pod parent offers no hint of blue coloration outside of a slight plum blush in the eyezone pattern. The petal base color is apricot with a violet wash emanating from the eyezone. It's pollen parent, "Blue Reality' descends from a beautiful line of blue patterned daylilies with base petal colors with less violet tending toward cream. This line's progenitor, 'Wedding Band' likely provided this base color. In the above pedigree, the pollen parent of 'Doyle Pierce' was 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby'. Notice the differences in genetic variation in the pedigree above of 'Karma Queen' and the pedigree below of 'Eighth Wonder' through the pollen parent and next through the pod Parent. Interesting side note: 'Cabo San Lucas' also occurs in 'Eighth Wonder's' pedigree. For this reason these two will be crossed in my Patterned breeding program. You may have noticed that 'Laws of Illusion' Petit 2012 is a frequent contributor to this line. Below is the pedigree of 'Laws of Illusion'. It occurs five times in the pedigree of 'Eighth Wonder.' Pictured above: 'Black Magic Momma' Harry P 2017 17-22 TET (Midnight Crush X Heart of the Obsidian) 6.75”, EM RE, SEV, 30” Scape, 4 Way Branching, 28 Buds. This is daylily flower presents many of the traits that I would like to develop in my blue line, broad, overlapping petals, ruffled edge with minimal yellow, and deep saturation of color that is the petal base color not an extended eyezone. The color is a deep violet wine, born of red with reflective characteristics that resemble velvet. The slightest hint of blue is perceived in the watermark or halo just outside of the throat and along the midrib. Could this cross into my blue breeding program open doors to possibilities? I'm eager to find out. The pedigree for 'Back Magic Momma' is below the pic. The final selection for my Foundation Stock is 'Casa Santo Domingo' Harry P 2016 TET 13-68 (Dark Moon Rising X When Royals Dream) 6.75” EM, RE, SEV, 28” Scape, 4 Way Branching, 28 Buds. Pictured above. 'Tetra Lavender Blue Baby' is only three generations back.
I'm drawn to this flower for its shape, form, size and substance. I also appreciate its rich saturated color. Most blue daylily flowers lack the rounded, overlapping petal shape that this flower has. This beauty may find its way into both my blue and massive flower lines. |
